Angus Smythe

Angus Smythe is the nom de plume of Peter Taft, a Brooklyn-based music photographer. He attended Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied theater, poetry and ballet. Later he studied at the School of Visual Arts where he fell in love with still photography.

After a debut exhibit at the Goldstrom Gallery in Soho, he began shooting at iconic New York rock venues, among them CBGB's, The Limelight and many other Lower East Side clubs.

His early photographic work was shot on film but he has since embraced digital black and white photography. Angus has described his style as one that seeks “to bring a timeless feel to the digital age, and to walk the razor’s-edge between posed and candid.”

Outside of photography, Angus is a disaster medic, search and rescue dog handler, water rescue instructor and an NGO campaigner. He has worked in disaster zones all over the world, recently completing his third tour of earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
