Matt Ellis began photography at the age of 13, when his mom bought his first camera to help occupy his idle hands. By 15 he was being published in the newspaper of his hometown in Texas. In school Matt spent a majority of his time in the schools antiquated darkroom using equipment that was 3 decades older than him.
In 2007, after graduating college with a degree in photo communications and not biology as his family had hoped for, Matt began his photo career in Austin, TX, a city with a reputation for live music. With his passion for music but lack of musical talent, he worked as a music photographer under the company C3 LLC, who put on some of the nations largest music festivals such as ACL and Lollapalooza. Working with C3 helped him acquire his next job as house photographer for Stubbs Amphitheater in Austin, where many legendary musicians have made a stop. During this period of time Matt also began to assist several local and national photographers on both commercial and editorial assignments.
After building his reputation within the community, Matt moved to New York City to further his career. While in NYC, he has had the privilege of assisting on productions with photographers such as Annie Leibovitz, Steven Meisel, Solve Sundsbo, etc. Now more than a decade after Matt's origins into photography his work can be seen in magazines such as Rolling Stone, SPIN, and most recently Nylon.
In 2010 he was a winner of the PDN / Billboard Ultimate Music Moment Photo Contest with his picture of The Black Keys performing in Chicago. That same image has been published in multiple publications since. He continues to live and work as an editorial and advertisement photographer in New York City.
