Grateful Dead was really the hometown band of a young San Francisco magazine called Rolling Stone. but editor Jann Wenner balked at doing a feature on them. Finally after the magazine had been printing for 18 months, he relented. For this shoot in the early summer of 1969, photographer Baron Wolman wanted to feature each member individually. After these photos came out of the developer, photographer Baron Wolman spent hours trying to figure out how Jerry Garcia got his finger to do that. Wolman later learned that Garcia had lost most of the finger in an accident and that he was quite shy about it. “I like to call it ‘Jerry Waving,’” Wolman says.
