In 1968 Ron Pownall landed a job with the Chicago Tribune. He found himself in the middle of the Democratic Convention riots. His first music assignments were Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Cream.
After three years with the Trib, he moved to Boston, where he immersed himself in the burgeoning music scene. He started working with Aerosmith in ’73 and Boston in ’76, relationships that have lasted 30+ years. He has photographed Elton John, Queen, J.Geils Band, The Cars, Meatloaf and Ted Nugent, among others, for album, publicity and tour shoots. Assignment work followed for publications including Rolling Stone, Creem, Circus and People. He also produced album work for CBS/Sony, Epic, WEA and others.
Over this course of his career, Ron has observed big changes in the music business including more restrictive band access and increasingly thorny copyright issues. Nonetheless, he says, “the biggest thrill is still shooting live concerts. There is nothing as rewarding as capturing a split-second of high energy on tack-sharp Kodachrome, whether it be Bruce or Mick or a local club band. I was lucky to have had the full access I did in the early, ‘golden days’ of rock photography… back when the music was the bottom line.”
