Robert Matheu has been a music photographer since his teenage years in Detroit, where he attended the earliest MC5 and Stooges shows. His photography has appeared on countless albums and magazine covers worldwide, and in such prestigious publications such as: Playboy, Vogue, Rolling Stone, Life, Time, Harpers, MOJO, Melody Maker, Los Angeles Times, Music Life and CREEM .
From George Harrison and Brian Wilson to Johnny Cash and the Faces, from Cheap Trick and Pretenders to the Clash and the Stray Cats. Matheu has compiled a comprehensive historical compendium of photographs whose iconoclastic images are as revealing as they are diverse.
Never putting his trusty Nikon down, but always one for distraction…Matheu also served as the official photographer and artist-press liaison for the North American segment of the historic, continent-spanning LIVE AID concerts. When The Viper Room opened in 1993, his long time friend Johnny Depp invited him to exclusively photograph the opening night, which in turn lead to a 6 month tenure as house Deejay, giving Matheu carte blanche to invite his friends to the club, to relax and jam. In 2007 he oversaw the publication of the HarperCollins hardcover anthology CREEM: America’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll Magazine. His second hardcover book, The Stooges: The Authorized and Illustrated Story, was published by Abrams. Which led to his role as executive producer along with Iggy Pop, of the Raw Power boxset that included a DVD documentary which he co-wrote. Since then Matheu’s work was prominently featured in such best selling hardcover volumes as The Rolling Stones: 50; Louder Than Hell; The Red Hot Chili Peppers; The Replacements: The Photographic History; worked closely with John Varvatos on his book : Rock In Fashion; his images were personally chosen by the authors in the Genesis Press deluxe editions by Jimmy Page, Faces, and Eric Clapton.
