Patti Smith photographed in Detroit before one of the first performances after an extended "retirement" to raise her family. I had known and worked with Patti since her first visit to Detroit when her debut album "Horses" was released, photographing her and the Patti Smith Group on and off stage.
After her next album "Gone Again" she performed at a charity benefit in Los Angeles for the Sweet Relief organization, which helps musicians in need. I made 16X20 sepia prints, for her to autograph and donate for the event auction. She gave me one of the finest compliments upon seeing the photos by comparing them to the work of her good friend Robert Mapplethrope, noting they were the most beautiful prints she'd seen since his.
